Marketing Shouldn't Depend on You Remembering to Do It

Marketing memory problem vs marketing system

Most small businesses do not have a marketing problem. They have a memory problem.

Ask an owner why they haven't posted in three weeks and you will almost never hear "I ran out of ideas." You'll hear that the week got away from them. A guest needed something. An employee called out. A quote had to go out by Friday. Marketing was on the list — it just wasn't on the list of things that had to happen today.

So marketing happens in bursts. It happens when someone remembers. It happens when there is a quiet afternoon. Most often, it happens when business gets slow enough to make it urgent — which is the worst possible moment to start, because the work you do this week rarely pays you this week.

That is the difference between doing marketing and having a marketing system.

Doing marketing is a task. It begins with a blank page and the question "What should I post today?" It depends entirely on someone having time, energy and inspiration at the same moment. It is the only part of the business still run on willpower.

Having a marketing system is different. A system starts from something you already know — a question customers keep asking, a lesson you learned the hard way, the reason you do one thing differently than everyone else — and then it moves that one idea through a repeatable path: an article that explains it properly, conversations that open it up on social, an email that continues it with people who already trust you, a follow-up for the ones who lean in.

Nothing in that path requires you to remember anything. The idea does the remembering.

Here is the test worth sitting with: if you disappeared for a month, would your marketing continue? Not perfectly — but would anything at all reach a customer without you initiating it?

If the honest answer is no, the problem was never discipline. It was that the marketing was built out of individual tasks instead of an operating process.

    That is a fixable problem.

And it starts by building a system around something your business already has plenty of:

    What you know.
